still in mourning, students in newtown went back to school. everyone but the sandy hook kids who will return after the winter break to school in a neighboring town. sandra endo has that part of the story. >> reporter: the first day back to school in newtown. children returning to classes tuesday and the painful reminder of those who could not. on the bus ride to school, grief was a constant reminder. >> i noticed it was quiet because people were thinking about the tragedy that happened. >> reporter: at schools teachers and students spent time to reflect. >> they just talked about how things will get better than they are now. i felt safe because when your teachers talk to and comfort you about everything that happened. >> reporter: for students at sandy hook elementary, the next time they'll return to will be in the new year. newtown superintendent says teachers and students need more time to deal with the trauma and get used to the new space in a neighboring town. state and local officials had no estimate on attendance for newtown's first day back at school. but returning to a ro

that the gunman burst into sandy hook elementary school. church bells will toll across the country 26 times to remember each of the children and educators killed, and after being noticeably quiet for the past week, the national rifle association holds a news conference next hour. the gun rights groups will comments on the shooting as it faces impassioned calls for tighter gun control. poppy harlow, jason carroll are in newtown on this somber morning. poppy is the at the town's memorial. good morning, poppy. >> reporter: good morning, carol. let's look at what has become this small makeshift memorial that began the day after the horrific shooting, has grown into something beautiful, it is blocks long, it is across the street and people will gather this morning and across this town to remember the 26 lives that were lost one week ago at 9:30 a.m. as you said church bells will toll 26 times for the victims, also the president and the white house will take that moment of silence. 28 governors from across this country have asked residents of their state to participate in moments of silence. peop

rang out in honor of those killed a week ago when a gunman burst into sandy hook elementary school. 20 children and six adults died at the school. the gunman also killed his mother and himself. governors in at least 29 states called for a moment of silence in honor of the victims. now the white house says president obama took part privately. also in newtown today, three more victims of the massacre are being laid to rest. yesterday funerals were held for three 6-year-olds and two teachers. it is a heartbreaking scene that has played out over and over again this week. the mother of the gunman adam lanza has also been laid to rest. a friend says nancy lanza was buried yesterday at an undisclosed location. >>> the gun control debate intensifying one week after that horror in newtown, connecticut, the killing of innocent children. just moments ago we heard from the national rifle association, executive director wayne lapierre called for putting armed police in every school. he also blamed the media, violent video games and a lack of prosecutions of violent crimina criminals. more gun laws

, when adam lanza started shooting his way into sandy hook elementary school last friday he had been confronted by qualified, armed security? will you at least admit it's possible that 26 little kids, that 26 innocent lives might have been spared that day? is it so abhorrent to you that you would rather continue to risk the alternative? is the press and the political class here in washington, d.c. so consumed by fear and hatred of the nra and american gun owners, that you're willing to accept a world where real resistance to evil monsters is a lone, unarmed, school principal, left to surrender her life, her life, to shield those children in her care? no one, no one, regardless of personal political prejudice has the right to impose that sacrifice. ladies and gentlemen, there's no national one size fits all solution to protect being our children but do know this president zeroed school emergency planning grants in last year's budget and scrapped secure our schools policing grants in next year's budget. with all the foreign aid the united states does, with all the money in the federal
